Introducing Fair Hero Stud Finder

We frequently get asked for stud recommendations, particularly for rarer breeds and colours. We’ve always been happy to put our clients in touch with each other and the Stud Wall in our clinic has made a lot of matches.

To take things to the next level, we’re launching a new website - Fair Hero Stud Finder which will showcase the amazing boys that work out of our clinic in Doncaster. This completely free service will make it easier than ever to find work for your boy or find the perfect local stud for your girl.

If you have a boy you’d like to list, you can sign him up today. Your contact details will be kept confidential, we will field the enquiries and only pass on your details if you are happy for us to do so.

We are starting today with our clinic, but we are hoping to offer this service to other clinics. We want to give our clients access to the best boys nationally.

What is a Reverse Progesterone Test and what are they used for?

What is a Reverse Progesterone Test and what are they used for?

If we tested progesterone to establish the optimum breeding days, why would we test again? We may perform a viability progesterone check part way through the pregnancy, which I will talk about in another post. Or we may perform a reverse progesterone test to determine if the puppies are ready to be delivered. So how does that work?

Milk Supply

Many breeders worry about milk supply, especially when a c-section is involved.  My thoughts?  Many vets administer oxytocin to help with milk supply. There are also natural supplements and homeopathic remedies that can help. Give me a call or a message if you need support.

On a general note I would always say try not to worry and rush to supplement puppies with formula. A bitch may struggle making enough milk to support her pup’s needs if they are being supplemented unnecessarily.  The reason?  Her body simply doesn’t know how much is needed. If the demand is not there, how can she know to increase milk supply?

A healthy bitch, with a good diet and access to her puppies should naturally produce enough milk to sustain her litter. If this is not the case or of the litter is simply too large then intervention may be necessary.

For the first couple to days mum is providing vital colostrum to her babies. Colostrum is liquid gold. It may not seem like much, but it jump starts the puppy’s immune system.

Orphaned pups without access to colostrum from mum are left at a major disadvantage, which is why plasma (adult dog serum as a source of protective immunoglobulins) is often given during the first two days of life.  Again if any of my clients need additional information and support with this simply contact me.

My next post will be about safe ways to supplement pups should it be required xxx

Introducing Puppy Scales our iPhone App for Breeders

A little gift from Fair Hero!  A FREE iPhone app designed to monitor your litter’s weights. Just click the link to download it to your iPhone and check out the brief demo!

Personally when recording weights I invariably lose the paper or it gets covered in stains🙈🤢. The beauty of this app is that we always have our phones to hand!  It tracks each pup’s weight and allows you to compare the progress of the whole litter.  A paper report can then be printed for your records. A MUST HAVE for licensed breeders.

I hope this helps. Tracking weights is key to ensuring pups are thriving and is often the first indication of an issue.

THIS FREE APP IS AVAILABLE ON THE APP STORE. Note: This is not a free trial. It is free to all for as long as you want to use it.

A like, follow, share or app store review would be nice, but it’s certainly not required. X

My Raw Feeding Adventure

Not sure this blog post is going to be as exciting as the title might suggest…. Oh well!

So for today’s blog post I thought I’d talk about raw feeding. Now let me begin with a little disclaimer. I’m not an expert, I am however a big believer in raw feeding. I firmly believe that raw feeding is beneficial to both body any mind.

I personally love to hand feed my dogs. I enjoy the quality time we share. I love how engaged they are waiting for their name to called. The eye contact we enjoy and I appreciate their gentle mouths and  good manners.

Now as far as what I feed I am much more confident in my raw feeding abilities these days. I love to mix things up and keep things varied. Staples include coconut oil, eggs, cheese and Greek yogurt.  Vegetable, fruit and other additions are also used when in season, with varying degrees of success. For example the water melon and blueberries went down like a lead balloon.

Attached is a document I put together. It’s my own take on raw feeding and is something I offer to families who are having a Fair Hero puppy and are wanting to feed raw.  I’m always learning and appreciate the advice and support I’ve been offered over the years so here’s a little something from me x

Understanding Female Fertility Part 1 EGG MATURITY - Shedding the Polar Body

Understanding Female Fertility - I've decided to do a little blog series, which I hope will allow you to understand your girl and her fertility better. It's going to be in no particular order, just whatever comes into my head that day.

Today's topic is going to focus on ovulation and specifically the "status" of a female's eggs once she's ovulated. As part of a bitch's heat cycle she will produce immature eggs at ovulation. Ovulation DOES NOT mean it's time to breed your girl! Each egg still needs to shed a little moon called the polar body before it is ready to fertilize and this takes time!

When speaking to clients I usually compare the freshly dropped eggs as fruit that is firm and not yet ripened. My goal for my clients is to get two breedings 2 & 4 days from ovulation to optimize success (assuming fresh semen is used). This gives the eggs time to mature. Now while I'm here let's talk about timing some more! It is so important to have patience, to not rush and to trust your clinic. Recently I have seen two dogs bred on VERY low numbers simply because they were accepting of the male. The result? Well predictably both bitches were empty when scanned. Now this was a tough pill for both clients to swallow, but it was a learning moment for both breeders. I'm very good at what I do, but I am always working to be better - experimenting, reading and most importantly LISTENING.

Now I honestly believe that the clinic/client relationship can only be productive if both parties are on the same page. Trust in the advice and service provided is essential and if it's not there then find someone you can work with.

I'm going to share a quick story from clinic today. It's probably what inspired this post!

A female had been taken to the stud and they had been unsuccessful. The bitch was not happy and refusing to stand.

Both dogs were then brought to me for an Artificial Insemination. After meeting and playing with the girl for a few minutes my feeling was she was simply too early. After speaking with the owners the problem became clear. Another clinic had measured her progesterone levels at 12nmol and advised to breed in two days. JUST NO!

Tube Feeding Guide

Happy to share our Fair Hero Tube Feeding video. A detailed demonstration of how I tube feed. Others may may do things differently. However this technique works best for me and the babies I’ve cared for. Little Remi, the frenchie puppy in the video, was successfully hand reared. This little fella is off living his best life with his family x
